Area 3:2. 26 High Street South, Dove House
A little further along High Street South toward the war memorial at number 26 is the very imposing Dove House. It was originally Dove House Farm and was known to the village colloquially as ‘the dove-us’.
It is thought to be the oldest property in our village and got its name from the dovecot which was once built in its extensive grounds, but is no longer there. The North East corner of this Elizabethan house is jettied which means the first floor overhangs the ground floor and the beam which supports this is called a dragon beam!
As you can see the building is undergoing extensive renovation work and so the only opportunity you have to see the frontage in all its glory is to look at the website picture, before all the scaffolding went up.
